Happy #NationalBookLovers Day!

August 9, 2023 by admin

Today is the day we officially celebrate how much we love to read books! I think I can safely say we all do a little happy dance when we open a book and fan the pages, inhaling the intoxicating aroma that begs us to get lost inside the story the author spins for us. I also read on a Kindle. I get just as excited knowing I can stay up past when the bedside lights have gone out and read until my eyelids are too heavy to read anymore.

Either way you choose to read, it’s escapism at its best. I’ve learned about things I never knew existed. I’ve broadened my horizon with self-help books. But what I love doing the most is letting my imagination set free in the world an author creates.

I read every day. Rare is it that I don’t find time to dive back into a book. It’s a pleasure I look forward to whether it’s while I’m eating lunch or before I go to sleep. I can read anywhere and I take full advantage of it.

When I decided to write the Guardians of Orion series, I didn’t have an office. I started writing on my laptop on a folding table in our bedroom. We moved shortly after, and I was blessed enough to have an office. I put up a vision board, set up a quarterly calendar, and created scenes on a poster board to lay out what would happen in each act. I’m a visual learner, so I need these reminders around me to inspire my muse. I also created many boards on Pinterest. You can find me at authorslrichardson if you want to take a look.

In honor of today, I thought I’d share a sneak peek into my office… my world where I spend most of the day shifting and translating what is happening in my mind. It’s like seeing a movie in my head and figuring out the best way to share it on paper.

Some days, it flows freely.

Some days, it’s a log jam.

Either way, it’s amazing or as my character Olivia is told about her journey…

Your burden, your blessing.

So, thank you for sharing in my world, for enjoying my books, and for being a lover of all books!

My office with one of the many bookshelves in our home.
Inspiration pictures of Olivia, Zach, Sergio and Lucia… the Guardians of Orion.
My scene index cards. Each color is the POV of the chapter.
This is the church I used for inspiration for the one found in Magiland. The church is called Las Lajas Sanctuary in Colombia. It’s on my bucket list to visit.

That’s all for now. I hope you enjoyed the pictures. Please reach out if you have any questions or comments you would like to share with me.

So now… please do me a favor. Go celebrate #NationalBookLoversDay by treating yourself by getting lost in a book!

Happy reading!

Why I’m Taking a 30-Day Break from Social Media & Decluttering My Digital Life

September 10, 2021 by admin

Hello!
Yep, it’s me. It’s been too long since I’ve reached out to you. I’m sorry about that. Instead of 2021 filled with writing a new series and the release of Hunt For Orion, the last book in my Guardians of Orion trilogy, a health crisis blindsided me. I had surgery in May and am finally feeling like my old self!
Thank Goodness!

During this time of mental fatigue and physical exhaustion, an insidious behavior crept into my daily life. Mindlessly scrolling through my social media apps and spending waaayyyy too much time doing it! Worse, my empathic personality road the emotional ups and downs of social media posts, depleting my precious health reserves.

During my road to recovery, the compulsion to check my phone or surf the internet still had a firm grip on me. I was easily distracted, finding it difficult to get my writing chops back in shape. Why couldn’t I get back to work?
Because I broke the golden rule of productivity.

I squandered precious and valuable time.
And that pissed me off.

Hence, the 30-day Digital Detox. Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport is a fabulous road map on how to declutter your social media, streaming apps, and video games for 30-days. When done, the crucial work is discerning each app’s worth and carefully decide if you want to add it back into your life… with limits. The Detox takes some planning. I had to figure out what I would get rid of, let my social and business platforms know, and decide how I would fill this newfound time.

Let me just say, it was so freeing offloading those apps from my home screen! Case in point. It’s 6:30 in the morning and I’m writing this newsletter, not on my social media! High Five!!!! I’ll keep you updated on my detox progress over the coming weeks, as well as sharing my revamped newsletter. I’m excited to unpack both of these with you next week! That’s all for now! Thank you for sticking with me! I promise to make it worth your while!
Please contact me if you have questions about the 30-Day Digital Detox. I’d love to hear from you!

Cheers and Happy Reading!
